ACTIVITIES

1. Clinical: Providing diagnostic and therapeutic services to all varieties of speech, hearing and language disorders

a. Diagnostic services:

  • Comprehensive assessment procedures for all types of communication disorders, for different age and language groups by a team of speech-language pathologists and audiologists
  • Consultancy services by allied professionals –ENT doctors, Clinical psychologists, Pediatrician, Neurologist, Phonosurgeon, Plastic surgeon, and Prosthodontist
  • Counseling and guidance for clients with communication disorders
  • Individual and group counseling services for caregivers, teachers and employers for family, educational and vocational management

b. Therapeutic services:

Therapeutic services on individual &/or group basis for short/long term

  • Language therapy , including reading and writing for individuals with hearing impairment, specific language impairment, learning disability, mental retardation, cerebral palsy, autism spectrum disorders, aphasia etc.
  • Listening training for individuals with hearing impairment
  • Articulation therapy for individuals with misarticulation, cleft lip & palate, dysarthria etc.
  • Voice therapy for individuals with voice problems
  • Fluency therapy for individuals with stuttering, cluttering etc.
  • Physiotherapy for individuals with neuromotor problems
  • Occupational therapy for individuals with neuromotor problems
  • Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) training
  • Behavior modification for clients with behavior problems
  • Guidance through correspondence for the needy clients

2. Training:  

  • Imparting practical and professional clinical training in the management of speech-language & hearing disorders to
  • Undergraduate and post graduate students in speech and hearing
  • B S Ed (hearing impairment)
    • Conducting short term training programs to allied professionals
    • Orientation programs
    • Conducting workshops/seminars related to rehabilitation issues
    • Providing public education services
      • Material development:
  • Developing assessment materials for various speech-language & hearing disorders
  • Developing teaching aids like audiovisual aids, models, posters, drill materials for therapy, materials for clinical training, home training and public education purposes
    • Translations and development of evaluation and training materials in different languages and for different disorders and age groups
    • Extra curricular activities :

Conducting summer and dussera camps for children attending therapy and preschool training program

  • Celebration of important dates like Helen Keller deaf-blind awareness week, international stuttering awareness day, World disabled day etc
  • Conducting co-curricular activities like sports, games, drawing, painting, crafts, dance, yoga, cultural programs and competitions

INFRASTRUCTURE

  • Building: The newly constructed therapy clinic building consists of 175 and odd rooms (66000sq.ft) for providing diagnostic services, individual treatment, group counseling and treatment, parent counseling, conducting workshops, seminars for allied professionals and public along with special labs for carrying out specialized assessment procedures for various clientele. The Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Sri Shatrughan Sinha formally inaugurated the building on 25 th January 2003.
  • Staff: Apart from the staff in the department mentioned above, faculty and clinical staff from the departments of audiology, speech language sciences, speech pathology, ENT and clinical psychology provide clinical services in the OPDs and consultations full time. Consultancy services are also available from allied professionals like neurologist, pediatrician, plastic surgeon, prosthodontist, phonosurgeon, physiotherapist and occupational therapist on part time basis for effective team management of these disabilities.
  • Equipment: State of the art equipments and software programs are available for assessment and training of clients with various types of voice, phonology, fluency and language disorders are available.
