Dr. Vijayalakshmi Basavaraj

Dr. Vijayalashmi Basavaraj is an Alumnus of All India Institute of Speech and Hearing obtaining her B.Sc. (Sp. & Hg), M.Sc. (Sp. & Hg.), and Ph.D. (Sp. & Hg.) degree from the institute.  

She has rendered service both in non-government and government institutes, organizations, hospitals over the last 33 years. She has worked in 4 different states across India in several prestigious institutes. This includes her appointments at All India Institute of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Mumbai, B.M. Institute of Mental Health, Ahmedabad, Mangalajyothi Integrated School for the Physically Handicapped, Mangalore, Institute of Speech and Hearing, Bangalore, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, (as Asst. Prof. of Audiology/SLP), Ali Yavar Jung National Institute for the Hearing Handicapped) [as Head, Dept. of Audiology and Deputy Director (Technical)],Mumbai, National Centre for Differently Abled, IGNOU, New Delhi (as the Director). She took charge as the Director of All India Institute of Speech and Hearing on 4 th September 2006.  

She has over 22 years of experience in teaching undergraduate and post graduate students. Her special areas of interest are Pediatric and Rehabilitation Audiology and Hearing Science. She has guided several Masters Dissertations. She has been a member of Board of Studies and Board of Examiners of several universities in India.  

She has actively participated in organizing several National & International Conferences, seminars and workshops. She has traveled widely in India and abroad to different countries like USA, Australia, UK, (the then) Yugoslovia and Malaysia in connection with research projects, International Conferences, etc.  

She has published 5 books and 56 scientific papers. Has handled National and internationally funded research projects. She has been involved in research developed tests for assessing language acquisition in children, early identification of hearing impairment in neonates and infants, genetics of hearing impairment early intervention, digital amplification systems. Correspondence therapy for children with delayed speech language in the last 33 years.  

Dr. V. Basavaraj was a consultant audiologist for five years to a former President of India.

She has been active member of Indian Speech and Hearing Association. She has been the office bearer of ISHA in various capacities. She was the Editor of Journal of ISHA for two terms, and is now the President elect.  

She has won several best paper awards, in conferences and recently, in the year 2006, was honored with Padmashree Professor Kameshwaran Endowment Oration award conferred by the Indian Speech and Hearing Association.
