Introduction
The Library and Information Centre of the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing, Mysore, has been in existence since the establishment of the Institute. The library and information center of the Institute is housed in a newly constructed four-storied building with an area of 24000sq. ft. The ground floor houses the Book Section, Back Volumes of Journals, and a browsing center, the first floor houses a section for display of new books, Current Journals and Reference books, the second floor houses the air conditioned computer browsing center and two spacious reading halls, while the 3rd floor houses the offices of Academic section The building and the furniture are specially designed to meet functional, as well as aesthetic requirements. The building is surrounded by beautiful green lush lawn and well-maintained rose garden and ornamental plants. This pleasant atmosphere is conducive for long hours of study. The library is well equipped with conventional resources, as well as technology based information services.
It is regarded as one of the best scientific and technical libraries in India. The AIISH library and information center is a specialist documentation center for the rehabilitation professionals in general and speech-language and hearing professionals, in particular.
The library follows open access system and the books are arranged using Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) scheme. Card catalogues/indexes are provided for manual search, Journals and book database is available on On-line Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) for electronic search through computer terminals.
Computerization:
The library uses Book Magic, an Integrated Library Management software package with all modules, for library housekeeping operations. The library Online Catalogue database has more than 13,750 records of books and back volumes of periodicals (Bibliographic Information). Using LIBRIS OPAC, users can search the Library Online Catalogue by Author, Title, Subject, and keywords. Also, the users can know the latest additions of periodicals and books and the status of a document (whether on shelf or on issue).
The Library has got a microwave link of 128kbps for internet connectivity. All computers in the Library as well as in the campus are linked through a 100Mbps LAN with fibre optic backbone. Three servers manage the network and all databases including the OPAC are available in the network.
