INFRASTRUCTURE |

The department of Prevention of Communication disorders (POCD) was initiated as a part of Plan activity of the institute in the month of January 2008. The department works towards primary, secondary and tertiary prevention of communication disorders which includes hearing impairment and all types of speech and language disorders. The various activities of the department are geared towards:
- Preventing the occurrence of communication disorders (primary level),
- Early identification of various factors leading to communication disorders (secondary level) and
- Implementation of rehabilitative measures to enable the clients to acquire speech, language and communication skills (tertiary level).

OBJECTIVES:
The objectives of the department are to:
- Develop and field test modules to train grass root level workers and care givers regarding prevention, early identification and early intervention of communication disorders.
- Develop High Risk Registers for Speech, Language and Communication Disorders.
- Undertake research in the areas of auditory genetics and genetic basis of communication disorders in collaboration with institutions having expertise in the area of genetics.
- Develop National Epidemiological data base and follow up programs for communication disorders
- Develop Help line for Senior citizens with communication disorders
- Conduct noise survey and promote conservation of hearing to prevent and control noise induced hearing loss.
ACTIVITIES
The following activities are currently being carried out to meet the major objectives of prevention and early identification of communication disorders:

Screening for speech, language and hearing disorders in the following population to facilitate early identification and prevention of the disorders:
- Enlighten on or about children with disabilities
- Enable them to become aides in child-care to existing professional services
- Enhance competencies in day-to-day handling of children with disabilities
- Empower on rights, privileges & sanctions existing for children with disabilities
- Explain prevailing terminology in disability in simple and demystified formats
- Engage on practical hands-on practices in handling children with disabilities
- Enlarge perspectives on broad policies, programs and problems of disabled
- Enlist supports and networking parents of children with disabilities
- Elaborate on disability matters of immediate concern in own home settings
- Emphasize on parent participation and involvement
- Expose on teaching materials and aides for children with disabilities

Extension clinical services to screen and assess individuals for speech, language and hearing disorders in Speech and Hearing Camps, Health Camps etc

Development of resource materials and training modules to educate the public, professionals and others regarding early identification and prevention of speech, language and hearing disorders

Sensitization programs for ground level health workers (Anganwadi workers, Health workers etc) and various professionals (teachers, nurses, doctors etc) through orientation programs, workshops, seminars etc.
