ACTIVITIES

Speech-language pathology is one of the two major branches in Speech and Hearing. The speech pathologist diagnoses and treats speech problems (such as stuttering, articulation, and voice disorders), language problems (such as aphasia and delayed language development) and related disorders (such as swallowing and oral motor difficulties). The Department of Speech-language pathology is involved in Academic, Clinical and Research activities for the rehabilitation of Speech, language & Communication disorders in children and adults. It is also involved in material development and public education for speech, language and communication disorders.

Refresher courses are offered to the professionals practicing in the field and who require to up date their knowledge from time to time. These activities are carried out through workshops, discourse, seminars etc.

Short-term courses and orientation programs are conducted as a part of training program for the benefit of the professionals from allied areas.Orientation, guidance and demonstrations are provided to different groups of professionals.

Clinical
Rehabilitation services are offered to the following categories of speech and language disorders:
  • Disorder of childhood language - These includes disorders in childhood such as specific language impairment (SLI), delayed speech and language (DSL) with hearing impairment, mental retardation, Cerebral palsy, autism, dyslexia, childhood aphasia, Craniofacial anomalies etc

  • Disorders of Adult language - These include acquired language disorders in adults such as aphasia, apraxia of speech, traumatic brain lesions etc

  • Disorders of Phonology - These include disorders of articulation, due to functional or organic etiology

  • Disorders of Fluency - These include disorders such as normal non-fluency, stuttering, neuro-genic stuttering, disorders in prosody due to any other causes

  • Disorders of Voice - These include voice disorders such as hoarse voice, high pitched voice, spastic dysphonia, functional aphonia etc

Special clinical units
  • Augmentative and alternative communication(AAC): Activites include assessment for candidacy in AAC, training the disabled individuals in communication using AAC aids and devices and research in AAC

  • Unit for Craniofacial anomalies: Rehabilitation of individuals with communication impairment due to craniofacial anomalies is undertaken. A team of professionals are involved in the program. A full fledged Prosthodontic laboratory prepares appliances such as speech bulb prosthesis, cleft palate prostheses and bite blocks.
